Dispatch, Kasich don’t understand what fiscally prudent means
This weekend the Dispatch published an editorial praising Governor Kasich for his extraordinary ability to be fiscally prudent. The evidence all seem to point to the opposite though – this Governor never was nor will ever be fiscally prudent.

How big is the budget hole anyways, Act 2
Today Innovation Ohio released their report looking at the real size of the budget hole in Governor Kasich’s budget. And I’m sure you will be shocked to learn that it is no were near as large as the administration has been claiming it is.

How big is Ohio’s budget hole, anyway?
Newspapers and members of the legislature are now questioning whether there every really was an $8 billion hole, and even the Governor’s budget director admits we may have $2 billion more than we thought. Despite all that, Kasich doesn’t want to see any of his cuts lessened further or privatization ideas scrapped. We ask why.

What to do with a surplus? Kasich says local governments should not expect any of it
At a public event yesterday Gov. Kasich again reiterated that he is opposed to giving any money from a surplus to local governments. This stands in clear contrast with what House and Senate Republicans wish to see. What does this mean for local governments and why is this still a bad idea?

The estate tax, local governments, and creating your own reality
We have heard a lot of Republicans during the budget process that their simply isn’t enough money to go around and that local governments are going to have to use the tools given to them to cut costs. Shockingly, the same people who tout this line are the same people in favor of cutting funds from being directed toward local governments. How can that be?

Kasich against closing tax loopholes to help fill budget cuts
That was quick. Less than a day after we report of a bi-partisan effort to close tax loopholes and use the money fill deep budget cuts the administration comes out again in opposition to the plan. I’ll give you three guesses why so.

[UPDATED]: Interesting Bedfellows: Left, Right and Center groups pushing review of tax breaks
We hear rumors that an unusual coalition of think tanks has coalesced around an idea of taking a more balanced approach to the state budget problems than the Governor or GOP-controlled Legislature appear willing to consider. They are advocating that the state look at tax breaks that have been on the books for years be reviewed and potentially eliminated if they are not paying off as promised. Will Kasich and the GOP Legislature listen? We remain pessimistic.

Tax cuts in 2012 could further harm schools and local governments
For the second day in a row Governor Kasich mentions cutting taxes in 2012. With state revenue rumored to be over $1 billion higher than projected for this fiscal year what will the Legislature do with these funds and how will that impact a possible tax cut next year.
