Today saw the release of a new Quinnipiac University poll of Ohio voters. In addition to questions about the Governor’s approval ratings (30% approve, 46% disapprove), several questions focused on attitudes about proposals contained in the Governor’s budget:

  • Do you approve of the way Kasich is handling the state budget?
    No: 51%, Yes: 31%
  • Do you think Ohio’s budget problems are serious?
Very serious: 62%, Somewhat serious:  33%, Not too serious: 2%
  • Will John Kasich be able to keep his pledge not to raise taxes or fees to balance the budget?
    No: 64%, Yes: 23%
  • Are Kasich’s proposals to balance the budget fair to people like you?
    Unfair: 53%, Fair: 36%
  • Do Kasich’s spending cuts go too far?
Too Far: 40%, No Far Enough: 15%, Just Right: 30%
  • Will Kasich’s cuts hurt Ohio’s economy?
    Hurt: 35%, Help: 31%

And here’s the punchline:

  • Do you believe there should only be spending cuts, or should taxes be raised to reduce spending cuts?
    Only cuts: 65%, Taxes/fewer cuts: 27%

Bottom line: Ohioans are a strangely fatalistic bunch when it comes to state budgets and the inevitability of increased taxes. They believe the budget situation is bad and, with few exceptions (increasing employee health care contributions), they dislike Kasich’s ideas for solving it.

Given all that, respondents still prefer draconian spending cuts that they believe are unfair and harmful to the economy than to having their taxes raised. But at the end of the day, they think the Governor will break that promise and raise taxes anyway. It will be interesting to see where his approval rating goes if he proves them right.

Beyond the budget questions, you should read this new post from our sister site, Plunderbund, unpacking more of what the poll reveals about Ohioans attitudes about their new Governor.
