    As a service to those of you who aren’t fans of reading 3,219 page documents, there are plenty of alternatives available to figure out what’s in the budget bill. We provide some useful links.

  • Budget Hearing Schedule: Thursday, March 31

    The budget was overshadowed by SB5 yesterday, but tomorrow we’ll be back in the swing of things with lots of hearings, including a number of cabinet agencies. Now that language is available, testimony can go beyond appropriations to discuss many of the policy provisions contained within the bill.

  • Could ODJFS Need An Additional $194 Million to balance their Budget?

    Interest payments on unemployment loans from the Feds are coming due in September and those numbers are not included in the Governor’s proposed budget. Could Kasich’s budget already be $194 million in the hole?

  • Today’s Hearing Schedule – March 29

    Budget hearings continue today, including the possible introduction of a substitute bill in House Finance at 1 p.m. (legislative language has been outstanding since the “introduction” of the budget on March 15). We have the complete schedule.

  • Questions on Governor’s Office Budget

    As previously noted, the Governor’s Office will be testifying in the House Finance Agriculture and Natural Resources (go figure) subcommittee today at 1p.m. (room 018) about its budget. Here is a link to the Legislative Services Commission Red Book outlining the budget proposal, which shows a slight decrease in funding required compared to Fiscal Year 2011. We have a few questions we’d ask if we were on the committee.

    Drastic cuts to school funding, SB5, and diverting of funds earmarked for local governments, will increase fiscal pressure on those least able to pay for them.

  • Kasich Budget: Ten Days Late and Counting

    You may have seen media coverage today about how, despite putting out numbers yesterday that suggest most schools will see increases in state aid, leaked Kasich administration documents show that all but 4 districts will actually have their funding cut. The administration argues these leaked documents use an old version of the formula, but tell the media the final formula isn’t ready yet. But here’s the thing: the budget was due March 15.
